The Other Side Of Ueno

On Sunday we went to Ueno, and left the station from the park exit. It was quiet, tranquil, kids were playing and the trees were in blossom. It was the picture of serenity!

Tonight we took the main exit, and wow what a difference! This place was like Shibuya on heat. Lane after lane of hustle and bustle. Slot machines and arcades, alleys of fast food restaurants, Market stalls with fresh fish and some crazy looking vegetables. This place was awesome and not what we were expecting at all. Probably our new favourite place for an evening out. It was cool and buzzing with lots to do, but didn't have the tourist factor of somewhere like Shibuya. Needless to say, we needed our phrase book to order a beer!

We wandered around looking for somewhere to eat, and the place seemed very popular for Okonomiyaki restaurants. This is where you get your table and a small BBQ to cook your own food. Above the BBQs are these metal pipes that disappear into the ceiling and suck up the hot smoke. You then get to order your selection of seasoned, raw meets and fish. Them with a couple of Asahis, you cook at your own leisure!

The place we ended up in was called Kiwami-ya and we couldn't recommend it more. Tucked down the side of a small alley, the place looked quite buzzing from the outside. Packed with locals, cooking their meats over the hot coals. We walked in and were taken up stairs where things got even better! The tables were all on the floor, and we had to take off our shoes before sitting cross legged on the floor. Awesome, Leanne had been wanting to do this since we got here. We ended up ordering beef, pork, cuttlefish, spring onions and okra. What a feast, accompanied by at least 6 or 7 Asahis each, Leanne really tucks them away for a girl! We must have spent about 3 hours in this place... by far our favourite night so far!

Highly recommended.
