Sea Urchin Sushi

Just had without doubt the best Sushi of the trip so far. We found a small restaurant at the side of the Market and were welcomed with shouting from the sushi chefs as we walked in. We were greeted by an old lady, who took our coats and bags and sat us down. The chefs didn't speak a word of English, but handed us a menu with pictures of the various pieces. Luckily there were English names underneath each of them.

We started with salmon and tuna sushi, and the chef seemed a bit disappointed that we weren't being more adventurous. We then moved on to raw Whitebait, Japanese Mackerel, Red Snapper, Salmon Roe Eggs and Sardines. All were amazing and Leanne tried everyone, bar the raw whitebait... Well impressed.

But then, out came the phrase book and we asked the chef what he would recommend. And to be honest, neither of us could actually picture what it was, a fish, a shellfish, a bit of coral, But he recommended the Sea Urchin. This was no standard bit of sushi, even at the Market it was 800 yen, so well over £5. Obviously a bit of a delicacy, and no wonder the chef was recommending... But it had to be done.

So I went for it... it was a bit slimy, almost like egg yolk, and tasted so different to anything I have ever had before. I wouldn't say I loved it, but well worth the experience...

Errr, just googled "Sea Urchin".... Yikes!
